The shy one with the loud laugh
The first night Shey was supposed to go live, she turned the camera on, looked at herself on the screen, and turned it right back off. She made tea instead. She has told this story to her regulars so many times that one of them now types "make tea" whenever she hesitates about anything.
The second night she stayed on. Three people wandered into the room. She was too nervous to say much, so she just answered questions about Nairobi: what the matatus are like, what she was cooking, why the power had flickered twice. All three came back the next night. That is when she understood what the men who find her already know. They were not there for a show. They were there for her.
Shey is the quiet one on the roster until something makes her laugh, and then you can probably hear her from the street. Her regulars compete to be the one who sets it off.
